In the early years especially, finding activities that genuinely engage children — that get them moving, thinking, asking questions — takes real effort. And then you need those activities to cover multiple curriculum areas without feeling like a stretch.
That's exactly what this free lesson plan is designed to do. It takes one simple, beautiful picture book and builds a full learning sequence around it — the kind that feels natural rather than forced, because it is natural.
Children go on a real walk. They collect real things. They write, sort, count, observe and wonder.
No extra prep. No separate planning for each subject. Just one connected learning experience that works.
You read I Went Walking with your class. Then you take them outside — to the school yard, a park, a garden bed, wherever you are — with a bag to collect small things and a phone or camera to capture what they notice.
Back in the classroom, those found objects and photos become the starting point for everything. Children write and illustrate their own version of the story (English). They sort, classify and count what they collected (Mathematics). They begin asking questions about living and non-living things (Science).
This is not a theoretical guide.
It’s a real example of an actual learning experience.
No fluff. Just practical, engaging learning.

It's the philosophy behind everything I create at Blooming Curious. Children who are actively involved, making real connections and encouraged to notice and question — those are the children who stay curious. And curious children are a joy to teach.
This is for you if you're teaching Foundation to Year 2 in a classroom or home learning environment, or if you're curious about what integrated, inquiry-inspired teaching actually looks like in practice — without the jargon.
It's also a good starting point if you've heard about inquiry learning but aren't quite sure how to make it work with young children. This is a real experience I used with my own leaners, not a theoretical guide.
